Before you begin:<\/strong><\/p>\n

You will need a Console cable and a serial adapter (most computers\/laptops nowadays no longer come with a serial port)<\/p>\n

Serial to USB Adapter:<\/strong><\/p>\n

1.<\/strong>\u00a0Connect the Console and Serial adapter together (Female end to the Serial Male end). Locate the Console port on your HP Procurve Switch\u00a0and plug the console cable into the port, It\u2019s usually located at the front of the device under the logo.<\/p>\n

2:<\/strong>\u00a0Connect the USB cable into your computer\/laptop and launch\u00a0\u201cDevice Manager\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0Verify which COM Port the cable has picked up and make a note of the port number. In this instance the Serial to USB has picked up COM3. (If you have purchased a new Serial to USB adapter you will need to install the drivers before you can see the device listed.<\/p>\n

Launch Putty or any other terminal emulation software, Tick the\u00a0\u201cSerial\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0connection type and enter the COM number in the serial line field. Leave the default connection speed of\u00a0\u201c9600\u201d<\/strong>. Click\u00a0\u201cOpen\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Putty will display the connection status, Hit\u00a0\u201cEnter\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Device information will be displayed such as the Switch Make and Model number. If the user has a warning banner setup it will also be presented.\u00a0 Hit\u00a0\u201cEnter\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

3:<\/strong>\u00a0Enter the Device Username\/Password<\/p>\n

Once the user has authenticated with the device it will display the device hostname followed by\u00a0\u201c>\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0this indicates the device is in\u00a0\u201cUser mode\u201d<\/strong>. User mode is used to view limited information about the device, therefore you will not be able to make any configuration changes in this mode.<\/p>\n

To gain further privileges and have the capacity to make configuration changes you must enter\u00a0\u201cPrivileged mode\u201d<\/strong>. Type\u00a0\u201c>Enable\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0at the prompt and type the\u00a0\u201cEnable Password\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0by default the password is blank.<\/p>\n

You will notice the prompt will change from\u00a0\u201c>\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0to a\u00a0\u201c#\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0this indicates you are now in privileged mode.<\/p>\n

You are now ready to start configuring your switch, you may issue a\u00a0\u201cShow Run\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0command at the prompt to display the running configuration of the device.<\/p>\n

If you issue a\u00a0\u201cShow IP\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0command the device will display the management IP address which can be used to access the device remotely using the built in web interface or simply accessing the device using putty using SSH.<\/p>\n
