{"id":3676,"date":"2015-03-19T17:13:00","date_gmt":"2015-03-19T17:13:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jay-miah.co.uk\/?p=3676"},"modified":"2024-11-18T17:15:12","modified_gmt":"2024-11-18T17:15:12","slug":"hp-procurve-backup-and-restore-a-configuration","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jay-miah.co.uk\/index.php\/hp-procurve-backup-and-restore-a-configuration\/","title":{"rendered":"HP Procurve \u2013 Backup and Restore a Configuration"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In this tutorial we will backup, erase and complete a restore of the configuration on the switch.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Backup a configuration<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>1.\u00a0<\/strong>Launch Putty, select the COM port of your serial to USB adapter and click\u00a0\u201cSerial\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"465\" height=\"447\" class=\"wp-image-3677\" src=\"https:\/\/jay-miah.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/1-36.jpeg\" alt=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>2.<\/strong>\u00a0Select\u00a0\u201cSession\u201d from the left hand pane and adjust the settings as shown below.<\/p>\n<p>Select \u201cAll Session output\u201d click browse and specify where to save the output. by doing this any commands we issue into the terminal window will be logged into the text file specified.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"461\" height=\"448\" class=\"wp-image-3678\" src=\"https:\/\/jay-miah.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/2-13.jpeg\" alt=\"2\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>3.<\/strong>\u00a0Click open.<\/p>\n<p><strong>4.<\/strong>\u00a0Log into the device using the log in credentials<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"671\" height=\"52\" class=\"wp-image-3679\" src=\"https:\/\/jay-miah.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/word-image-3676-3.jpeg\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>5.<\/strong>\u00a0Issue the following command, \u201c#Terminal Length 400\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTerminal Length\u201d Indicates the length of the lines that are displayed when a command is issued, in this situation we want the configuration to appear without any breaks when we issue the \u201c#Show Run\u201d command.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c400\u201d indicates the amount of lines that can be displayed before the terminal window breaks and asks the user to either press space\/enter to display the next line\/page. This range can be between 2-1000<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"675\" height=\"38\" class=\"wp-image-3680\" src=\"https:\/\/jay-miah.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/4-17.jpeg\" alt=\"4\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>6.<\/strong>\u00a0Next issue the \u201c#Show Run\u201d command<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"671\" height=\"423\" class=\"wp-image-3681\" src=\"https:\/\/jay-miah.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/5-22.jpeg\" alt=\"5\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Entire configuration\u00a0will be displayed without any breaks. during this time you will notice the session output file that you specified at the beginning has already started logging all the outputs, this is the backup file.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"746\" height=\"427\" class=\"wp-image-3682\" src=\"https:\/\/jay-miah.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/6-18.jpeg\" alt=\"6\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Erase an existing configuration<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>1.<\/strong>\u00a0To erase a configuration issue the following commands:<\/p>\n<p># erase startup-config<\/p>\n<p>and select \u201cy\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"674\" height=\"42\" class=\"wp-image-3683\" src=\"https:\/\/jay-miah.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/7-20.jpeg\" alt=\"7\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The device will reboot and reconfigure back to \u201cfactory default\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"673\" height=\"424\" class=\"wp-image-3684\" src=\"https:\/\/jay-miah.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/8-17.jpeg\" alt=\"8\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Once the device is ready log back into the switch<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"671\" height=\"52\" class=\"wp-image-3685\" src=\"https:\/\/jay-miah.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/3-29.jpeg\" alt=\"3\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>2.<\/strong>\u00a0Issue a \u201c#show run\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"671\" height=\"421\" class=\"wp-image-3686\" src=\"https:\/\/jay-miah.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/9-17.jpeg\" alt=\"9\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The device config is back to default.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Restore an existing configuration from backup<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>1.<\/strong>\u00a0Open the existing backup configuration in a text editor such as notepad and highlight the text from the beginning of the configuration which normally starts with \u201chostname\u201d until you reach the end.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"671\" height=\"545\" class=\"wp-image-3687\" src=\"https:\/\/jay-miah.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/10-19.jpeg\" alt=\"10\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>2.<\/strong>\u00a0Right click the text and select copy<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"452\" height=\"213\" class=\"wp-image-3688\" src=\"https:\/\/jay-miah.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/11-20.jpeg\" alt=\"11\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>3.<\/strong>\u00a0Open Putty, login to the device\u00a0and enter privileged mode.<\/p>\n<p><strong>4.<\/strong>\u00a0enter global configuration mode<\/p>\n<p>#config t<\/p>\n<p><strong>5.<\/strong>\u00a0paste the copied configuration into the terminal window by \u201cright clicking\u201d in the window. you will notice line by line the device will issue the configuration into the switch until it reaches the end. this could take a minute to complete.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"668\" height=\"422\" class=\"wp-image-3689\" src=\"https:\/\/jay-miah.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/12-17.jpeg\" alt=\"12\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Once the configuration has completed\u00a0restoring, you will be left with the \u201c(config)#\u201d prompt<\/p>\n<p>type \u201cexit\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"672\" height=\"423\" class=\"wp-image-3690\" src=\"https:\/\/jay-miah.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/13-21.jpeg\" alt=\"13\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>6.<\/strong>\u00a0Issue a \u201c#show run\u201d to verify the device has restored the configuration successfully.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"672\" height=\"422\" class=\"wp-image-3691\" src=\"https:\/\/jay-miah.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/14-21.jpeg\" alt=\"14\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>7.<\/strong>\u00a0issue a \u201c#wri mem\u201d to save the configuration to flash.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"674\" height=\"41\" class=\"wp-image-3692\" src=\"https:\/\/jay-miah.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/15-20.jpeg\" alt=\"15\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In this tutorial we will backup, erase and complete a restore of the configuration on the switch.
