NPS (Network Policy Server) is also known as RADIUS, NPS allows you to create and configure network access policies for\u00a0client health, connection request authentication, and connection request authorization. NPS can also be used to set-up a RADIUS proxy, which is used to forward remote access connection requests to another RADIUS server that can authorize or deny that request.<\/p>\n

In this step-by-step guide we will run through the basics of installing the role in server 2012 R2, Lets get started!<\/p>\n

Install the Network Policy Role\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

1.<\/strong>\u00a0Login to Windows Server 2012 and launch\u00a0\u201cServer Manager\u201d\u00a0from the toolbar<\/p>\n

2.<\/strong>\u00a0From the \u201cManage\u201d\u00a0button select\u00a0\u201cAdd roles and features\u201d<\/p>\n

3.<\/strong>\u00a0At the Wizard click\u00a0\u201cNext\u201d<\/p>\n

4.<\/strong>\u00a0Select\u00a0\u201cRole-Based or Feature-based installation\u201d\u00a0and click\u00a0\u201cNext\u201d<\/p>\n

5.<\/strong>\u00a0Click\u00a0\u201cSelect a server from a server pool\u201d\u00a0and highlight the\u00a0current\u00a0server, click\u00a0\u201cNext\u201d<\/p>\n

6.<\/strong>\u00a0Tick\u00a0\u201cNetwork Policy and Access Services\u201d\u00a0a new Windows will pop up click\u00a0\u201cAdd Features\u201d<\/p>\n

7.<\/strong>\u00a0From the roles menu tick\u00a0\u201cNetwork Policy and Access Services\u201d\u00a0and click\u00a0\u201cNext\u201d<\/p>\n

8.<\/strong>\u00a0At the features window, click\u00a0\u201cNext\u201d\u00a0no need to select anything further as we are not installing any additional features<\/p>\n

9.<\/strong>\u00a0Have a quick read of the role description and click\u00a0\u201cNext\u201d<\/p>\n

10.<\/strong>\u00a0From the role services list select\u00a0\u201cNetwork Policy Server\u201d\u00a0and click\u00a0\u201cNext\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

11.<\/strong>\u00a0Select the\u00a0\u201cRestart the destination server automatically if required\u201d\u00a0tickbox and select\u00a0\u201cYes\u201d\u00a0at the prompt. This will allow the server to restart automatically if a reboot is required at the end of the install.<\/p>\n

12.<\/strong>\u00a0Once the role is installed, click\u00a0\u201cClose\u201d<\/p>\n

13.<\/strong>\u00a0From the\u00a0\u201cTools\u201d\u00a0menu select\u00a0\u201cNetwork Policy Server\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

14.<\/strong>\u00a0Once NPS loads right click\u00a0\u201cNPS(Local)\u201d\u00a0and select\u00a0\u201cRegister server in Active Directory\u201d\u00a0this will add the server into the security group to allow NPS to authenticate users in AD.<\/p>\n

15.<\/strong>\u00a0At the warning prompt click\u00a0\u201cOK\u201d<\/p>\n

16.<\/strong>\u00a0At the warning confirmation click\u00a0\u201cOK\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

17.<\/strong>\u00a0From \u201cAD Users and Computers\u201d\u00a0locate the security group\u00a0\u201cRAS and IAS Servers\u201d\u00a0and confirm the server is a member of the group.<\/p>\n
